Based on the Plastic Surgery Statistics Report published in 2018, nose surgeries place among the top five cosmetic procedures administered globally. In addition to this, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons revealed that it is also one of the most complex surgeries done on the face, with a revision rate of 15 percent.
Nose surgeries are done for many reasons. It is sometimes done to help improve breathing conditions brought by injury or genetic conditions. More commonly, however, people have nose surgery to improve their physical appearance.
While it may seem like a good option, some people are scared to have nose surgery— even with enough reason— as they fear it will be painful. Following, we will review what to expect in regard to pain and surgical nose procedures.
Like most surgeries, general anesthesia may be used during surgical nose procedures. With general anesthesia, pain during the procedure will not be felt. While under general anesthesia, you will also be injected with local anesthesia. This will help with postoperative pain as well.
Some bleeding, along with drainage of mucus and old blood, is typical for a few days after the procedure, which might cause discomfort at times. During the recovery period, expect short-term pain.
Expect to have bruises and swelling after surgery. Most patients claim that they feel minimal to moderate pain for around 36 to 72 hours after the surgery.
Because everyone heals differently, it’s essential to be patient during your recovery period. Swelling, slight pain, bruising, and even headaches can be expected up to one month after surgery. It’s always a great idea to visit your surgeon during your recommended follow-up visits to ensure your healing is correct.
As a rule of thumb, your nose may still feel sensitive for up to three months, depending on how fast your body heals. Sensitivity means your nose will be tender and vulnerable to many factors. Thus, the recovery period becomes vital as it determines the successfulness of the surgical outcome.
Following are some common questions people may ask about nose surgery.
What can I do to recover after nose surgery?
Always adhere to your surgeon’s postoperative instructions. They give you these instructions so you can have a speedy, comfortable recovery. The surgical staff may recommend using an ice pack for the first couple of days. Ice can help decrease the pain felt post-op by helping to minimize swelling and bruising.
Your doctor will advise you to avoid blowing your nose after surgery. Blowing your nose can disrupt tissue which may prompt possible bleeding since your wounds are still fresh inside.
Keep your head elevated for the first week after surgery. At least four weeks after surgery, you should sleep on your back and avoid sleeping on your side.
It is also important to follow a generally healthy diet as proper nutrition will speed up recovery. You may want to eat soft foods as hard–to-chew foods may be uncomfortable the first few days after surgery.
Avoid doing vigorous activities or exercise until your surgeon says you can resume. You will want to avoid contact sports as well for some time after surgery.
How long does it take to recover?
Immediate postoperative healing tends to be during the first ten days of surgery. You may have a splint for the first 5-7 days. After these ten days, you can return to your lighter daily activities.
At around six weeks, your surgical incisions and tissue that was disrupted during surgery should be healed. This period varies from person to person, depending on many factors. You may continue to see and feel some residual swelling for up to six months. This swelling will most likely only be noticed by you.
So, is nose surgery painful?
As will all surgeries, there will be some pain involved. However, if you follow the post-op instructions, the pain will likely be mild to moderate the first few days and gradually lessen each day. At the end of the day, your willingness to reach your goal will be your motivation.
